Open lecture will be held at KADK, September 7th, 17:00 (auditorium TBD).
In 2016, Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design set out to explore the theme of «Hybrid Urbanism»: an exciting new space of possibility where the city and emergent technologies meet and intersect. Initially constrained by the limiting distinction between «physical» vs. «digital», it quickly became apparent that this opposition was outdated and we needed to consider a much broader set of emerging technological, economic and social forces at play. If anything was certain, it's that the future of urban design is as open-ended as ever and requires a new mindset, without prejudice and preconceptions, in order to make the most out of its now new and permanent state of hybridity.
In 2017, Strelka embarked on a 3 year experimental education programme to conquer «The New Normal» — catch up to the present and map new concepts to accurately describe the new «normal reality» of our collective built environments, in order to enforce new «normative claims» and impact their evolution in the future. With a strong emphasis on emerging technologies and speculative philosophy, the New Normal is thus a multidisciplinary effort to kickstart new urban design practices, reflecting not only on the new state of the world as it is but actively helping to determine what it should become...
In his lecture, «Hybrid Urbanism» Strelka alumni and «New Normal» Design tutor Nicolay Boyadjiev will speak about the evolution of the experimental design process and methodology behind some of the Institute unconventional projects, share key findings and speculative proposals from the first year of The New Normal programme, and hint at what's in store for 2018...
