The Maxims of Peter Pockets, an adaption of a work by Ivan Viripaev will be presented for the first time in Russia. The solo-performance was originally staged at the Meyerhold Theatre Centre in Moscow by director Zara Antonyan and features actor, Stephen Ochsner. In this adaptation, a twenty-year-old boy from Montana has a dream foretelling his death. This experience leaves him convinced that he only has eleven years left to live. As he travels across America to New York, collecting difficult questions about his existence, he explores the nature of life, love, death, and violence. He becomes a man through understanding that everything consists of love.
Сентенции Пантелея Карманова (The Maxims of Panteley Karmanov) is the first of many works written by Ivan Viripaev. Mixing the ancient writing-form of maxims with a contemporary textual style, Viripaev explores questions of love and life with intense interest and bright humor, despite the seemingly absurd and serious circumstances which surround his hero, Panteley, in Post-Soviet Russia. Panteley travels from Siberia to Moscow over eleven years after his dream, watching himself and others search for meaning in their chaotic lives. After performing the piece for two years in Moscow, Lithuania, Poland, and Armenia, Ochsner agreed with Viripaev that in order to translate the text he would need to adapt Panteley’s name to Peter and his adventure from Russia to an analogous American reality. Ochsner has done so, while preserving shadows of the original Russian text. This is bi-lingual adaptation, The Maxims of Peter Pockets, has been performed at the MAT Colorado and at Dixon Place in New York City. On March 16th it will receive its Moscow premiere.
Antonyan and Ochsner have composed a fast-paced, rhythmic tour-de-force, in which direct contact with the audience brings to life the most important character in this new drama form: Text.
Nikolay Berman, writes about the performance:
“This early Viripaev play that I once read and deemed incomplete suddenly created magnetic effects akin simultaneously to Oxygen and July, as well as Delhi Dance and Illusions. Much of this is thanks to fantastic actor, Stephen Ochsner, who delivers the play’s text at an unbelievably rapid pace, exploding with energy and filling the entire space of the theatre from beginning to end. He rattles off a continuous stream of speech while accepting the task to either play guitar or make strange movements or beat a rhythm on the wall with his hands. It was as if aching bits of consciousness materialized before our eyes; whether the consciousness of an artist, psychopath or poet.”
